Meet Kátia Abreu
Began as a Cattle Rancher
Kátia became a cattle rancher in 1987, after the death of her husband. Irajá Silvestre. Even with little knowledge in the field, she ended up moving to the farm located in Tocantins. She received guidance on how to conduct the business after finding a complete guide on what to do inside the property's safe.
According to Kátia, her husband had left a sort of inventory, which included explanations on how and where to invest the money, which debts should be paid, and which investments were priorities to increase the farm's productivity.
Leadership in Agribusiness
Kátia Abreu managed to handle all the bureaucracies involving the farm and stood out among the producers in the region. Soon, she became president of the Rural Union of Gurupi (TO).
In 1995, she was elected president of the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of Tocantins, serving four consecutive terms.
She was elected president of the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) in November 2008, serving until 2011. The entity represents 27 state federations, 2,142 rural unions throughout Brazil, and more than one million unionized producers.
Political Career
In 2002, she became a Federal Deputy, being elected to the Chamber of Deputies with 76,170 votes, the most voted in the state of Tocantins.
She was the first woman in Brazil to preside over the Rural Caucus in the National Congress, which at the time had 180 members.
In 2006, she won the election for a seat in the Federal Senate.
In 2009, she was among the one hundred most influential personalities in Brazil, according to a special edition of Época magazine.
In 2011, she became an ally of Dilma's government.
In November 2008, she was elected president of the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) for the 2008-2011 triennium. The entity represents 27 state federations, 2,142 rural unions throughout Brazil, and more than one million unionized producers.
She was appointed by Dilma Rousseff to the position of Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply in December 2014. She remained in the position until May 12, 2016, being dismissed on the day of Dilma's removal by the Federal Senate.
In April 2018, she joined the Democratic Labor Party (PDT). In August, she was confirmed as the vice-presidential candidate on Ciro Gomes' ticket in the 2018 presidential election, which came in third place.
She is currently affiliated with the Progressive Party.
In the 2022 elections, Kátia ran for re-election for a third term as senator. Without popular support, she finished in 2nd place, with just over 18% of the valid votes, losing to Dorinha Rezende (UNIÃO), who won 50% of the valid votes. Kátia leaves the National Congress after 20 years in office.
